Day 4

Day 4.

Today we had an early start! Alarms were set for 8:30, in order to be out for 9:00. Jeff and I were collected by Lorens and Joe and we headed down to the actual cape TOWN. There are some pretty nutty drivers in Cape Town, but we managed to find a space near communicares's office. It was time to meet the big boys of the business!!

We were greeted by all the communicare employees with a warm welcome. Jeff and I shook hands with the majority introducing ourselves, as you do. I followed Lorens and Joe into the board room and slowly one by one, more people who were quite high up in the business introduced themselves and took a seat. They briefed us on what communicare was about and how important social housing is for thousands of people. They soon took a keen interest in what our backgrounds were, why we took a gap year and what we wanted to do after the year had finished etc. Both jeff and I did a whole 15 minute talk each on all of those topics above and basically told them a little story about ourselves. In my opinion I would say we both relished the opportunity to really sell ourselves to them and create the best first impression possible. As time went by, I would say I became more comfortable of explaining what I wanted to achieve in life and how ultimately I wanted to teach in the future etc. After a good hours briefing session, maybe more, we sat down to lunch which communicare provided! Typical South African meaty delicacy with heaps of fruit! I was glad to see pineapple on there, my favourite!

It was now time to experiment with the trains and buses for a couple hours. Joe showed us the bus which we needed to take, the 103, and then how to master the metro rail which we will be using to get to the learning centre in Ruyterwacht, which is run by communicare. All travel arrangements are pretty straight forward to be honest but nowhere near as efficient as London so it was key we were aware of how they work and how to time it perfectly etc. So overall, I would definitely say that today's event would serve us really well in the future.

We came home to dinner which reception had kept seeing as we missed the slot earlier in the day. We reheated it and then I wanted to try my hairdryer out which I bought today, but yet again I would have to buy another adaptor which was a bit of an annoyance!

I'm going to go down stairs and catch up with the family now, come back upstairs, shower and then go and watch the arsenal game downstairs with jeff on his laptop!

Bring on the open top bus tour tomorrow! Cap, factor 30 and sunglasses need to be put on!!

All the best,

Luke
