Day 5

Day 5

We had an eventful day ahead so our alarm was set for 8:00 to get to the support office in Cape Town at 9, with a 20 minute bus journey. That gave me time to wash myself, get changed and pack a bag! Buses aren't hugely reliable out here as it's a new system so everyone's still getting use to it. We left at about 25 past/ half past to catch a bus from a station called Rayden, which is about a 30 second walk away.  Sense of direction and general knowledge of Cape Town was slowly but surely building up, which would help us alot in the next 3 months!

Today was designated for Wasima, a very nice lady who works for communicare, to take jeff and I on an open top bus tour of Cape Town. We arrived at 9:00, only to be told that we were there an hour earlier than we should be! With all the times we have been bombarded with, it's hard to keep track. Also the paper timetable given to us is often changing which we knew would happen anyway.. So that can't always be relied on.  Oh well, better to be early than late! Me and Jeff thought it would be a good idea to go and get some breakfast ahead of a tiring day, hopping on and off the bus seeing all the sights! We went to a little cafĂ© place where they did a breakfast for 25 rand which included, 3 scrambled eggs, 2 tomatoes, 2 slices of toast and cooked banana! 25 rand is about £1.50, so it was good value! (credit goes to Mark Ponzini for the conversion help before I left London.)

Time to get on the bus, we had met wasima and soon after hopped on the big red bus tour of Cape Town, blue route. The ticket cost communicare 300 rand for jeff and i's ticket, which is roughly 18 pound! I got some stunning photos and videos which will be shown to the family when I'm back, or if not before (if I work out how to use the mac Jeff has). I was really excited to be back at Hout Bay, where I had seen all the seals and had fish and chips. Thank god I had brought my video camera, some of the videos I got of the seals were unreal and you have to appreciate how brave the boys and women are who feed the seals in order to gain some extra rand.
Once again, we headed to Mariners Warf to have some fish and chips! It was becoming tradition.  (2 visits to Hout Bay = 2 visits to mariners Warf to have fish and chips.)

We hopped back on the bus and after about 20 minutes got off and visited sea point, where there was some lovely swimming pools which were filled with sea water! They were packed, despite it being Tuesday. It was the last day off school for kids in their summer holiday btw, I guess they were making the most of their last day. I got my favourite flavour of Ice cream, Mint choc chip, then sat down with Wasima and Jeff overlooking the waves and of course robben island, which wasn't that far away! Excited to be going there on friday!! Afterwards it was time to head back to communicares office, collect my jacket, say hello/goodbye to people and most importantly thank Wasima for taking us on the tour. As I said before, I got some great pictures and the headphones were helping me build on my knowledge of Cape Town. For example, the reason the water is freezing in the summer is because the warm heat makes the ice caps melt and therefore the current drags all atlantic oceans coldness into the beaches in South Africa.

I needed to go to clicks, a pharmacy, to get some after sun cooling spray and a travel adaptor for my hairdryer. We felt confident enough to walk there, which took about 10/15 minutes. I easily found my adaptor and gel, Mission accomplished! We headed for the civic centre to catch the 103 bus back to berghof, we was cream crackered to say the least. Tired from sitting down on a bus for most of the day,how embarrassing.

We came back to the room, after collecting our dinner, had a shower and applied some much needed aloe vera cooling gel to myself. Dinner was pretty nice to be fair! Pork stir fry, bit of apple crumble.. Decent stuff! I read my book 'bounce' which is a great read, as mark would say 'it dispels the theory that you're born with talent!' I'm nearing the 120 page mark, which is pretty good I would say! It all links to what I did in PE in terms of psychology. I've wrote about alot of the theories in the book so it's very understandable and relatable! I was thinking I could use it next year at Uni as a reference when writing essays. I conked out after our dinner and slept for a good two hours before heading down to use the wifi. I spoke to Joanne on Skype and the quality and connection of the conversation is so clear. It was nice to hear that even my nan is reading my blog! So if you're reading this nanny... Hello!!!! I will keep them coming and I hope you keep reading them.

I'm going to shoot now, going to see some more complexes that communicare own tomorrow!

All the best,

Luke
